Rewind Radio meets MPs to discuss Cornwall-wide FM coverage

Representatives from Cornish digital station Rewind Radio met with local MPs in Westminster to ask for FM coverage to broadcast local content across the county.

Managing Director Richard Woods and Commercial Manager Martyn met with MPs George Eustice and Derek Thomas who pledged their support for a new FM licence in Cornwall for locally produced commercial content.

With Pirate FM rebranding as Greatest Hits Radio, Rewind Radio says it will soon be Cornwall’s only local commercial radio station.

Richard Woods said: “Radio has changed a lot over the past few years with less accessibility available for FM listening. Cornwall has areas of deprivation and simply upgrading to more modern cars and devices is not an option for many, including the older age groups which make up a significant proportion of our population.

“We’re aware of the outcry from listeners at the imminent loss of Pirate FM and BBC Radio Cornwall’s reduced Cornwall-only content with shared regional broadcasts after 2pm on weekdays.

“As Cornwall’s only independent commercial station, we need to fight to provide the county’s listeners with what they are shouting for, a local FM licence dedicated to relevant, local content.”

Stewart Cawte from Keltek Brewery, who accompanied the delegation from Rewind Radio to London added: “We have been working with Rewind Radio and we share their frustrations from talking to the public. We are committed to helping Rewind Radio, Cornwall’s last standing station broadcasting across the Duchy, to obtain an FM licence.”

Rewind Radio is also planning an expansion plan including the introduction of additional roles including presenters, a social media and events person, and a media consultant.

Commenting on the expansion, Richard Woods added: “With the recent changes in the radio landscape, we see an opportunity to further strengthen our position and expand our reach, and we are excited to welcome talented individuals to join our team and contribute to our success.”
