Fun Kids launches radio station dedicated to Windrush Generation

A new temporary radio station has been launched by Fun Kids to help children understand and celebrate the Windrush Generation and its legacy.

Fun Kids Windrush is now live on DAB Digital Radio in London and the South East and online.

The station includes content created in collaboration with London youth groups. Children who took part in radio workshops helped produce short features that will be aired across the schedule.

Programming includes a factual series called The Windrush Story, a drama titled The Girl and the Suitcase, and a previously broadcast special hosted by YolanDa Brown. There are also fictional daily reports set in 1948 from the MV Empire Windrush, featuring imagined interviews with passengers and crew.

The playlist was developed in collaboration with writer and historian Edson Burton, who proposed a style based on musical “call and response” – a structure rooted in Caribbean musical traditions and their influence on British artists.

Lloydie James Lloyd, Content Controller at Fun Kids, said: “We’re excited to have created something unique that will reflect the Windrush story for a new generation.”

Content from the project is also available via podcasts, on the Fun Kids website, and on the main Fun Kids Radio station.

The project is funded by a Windrush Day 2025 Grant awarded to Inspiring Audio by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
