Voice FM raffles Gazza tears paper for studios

Voice FM is raffling an original newspaper marking Paul Gascoigne’s Italia 90 tears to support its studio refresh.

Station manager Xan Phillips is making his copy of the Daily Mirror from 5 July 1990 available as part of a fundraiser for Voice FM in Southampton.

The front page captured Gascoigne’s emotional reaction during England’s World Cup semi final against West Germany, a moment that has remained familiar to many supporters who watched the tournament.

Xan said: “This newspaper is a fascinating tale of England in the World Cup, and maybe, just maybe, the beginning of modern sport, when sportspeople became humans and were seen to feel the same emotions as fans on the terrace.”

Money raised through the raffle will go towards renovating Voice FM’s studios and office areas, adding equipment and training more presenters.

Voice FM says it has trained more than 120 people during the past four years and plans to continue developing local broadcasting skills while providing programming for Southampton.
