Wolf Alice named Radio X record winner

Radio X listeners have voted Wolf Alice’s The Sofa as their Record of the Year.
The announcement was made today as Radio X revealed the results of its annual listener poll celebrating music released over the past 12 months.
The track, released in July and taken from the band’s fourth studio album The Clearing, finished top of the vote ahead of new releases from Oasis, Biffy Clyro, Pulp and Sam Fender. The result reflects a strong year for the London four-piece, whose latest album debuted at number one and received a Mercury Music Prize nomination, making them the only artist to see their first four albums recognised consecutively.
Listeners placed Oasis’ 30th anniversary release Morning Glory Unplugged in second place, with Biffy Clyro’s A Little Love coming third. Pulp’s Spike Island finished fourth, underlining a wider return of interest in Britpop-era acts during this year, while Sam Fender featuring Olivia Dean reached the top five with Rein Me In.
The wider top ten also featured tracks by Sombr, Hayley Williams and Kasabian. Richard Ashcroft appeared at number nine with Lover, following his role supporting Oasis on their reunion tour, while Stockport band Blossoms returned to the list at number 15 with The Honeymoon after their headline appearance at Radio X is Ten Live at the O2 Apollo Manchester.
Jake Bugg and Circa Waves were also recognised, with Obvious and Old Balloons placing at numbers 34 and 36 respectively. Florence and the Machine, Mumford and Sons and Wet Leg all featured further down the list.
Matt Deverson, managing editor of Radio X, said: “It is no coincidence that as Radio X marks ten years, listeners have been choosing from a wide range of British artists. Wolf Alice taking the top spot reflects the connection our audience has with new music across rock and indie.”
