Scammers using Shine Radio to target authors

Scammers using Shine Radio’s name are targeting authors with fake podcast interview offers.

Petersfield’s Shine Radio has warned that emails claiming to invite writers onto its Talking Books programme are fraudulent, despite appearing convincing and personalised.

The messages reference real presenters including Suzie Wilde and Tim O’Kelly, and often include details about an author’s work to make the approach seem genuine.

Some recipients have been asked to pay fees for interview slots, share personal information or click on suspicious links. The station has stressed it will never charge guests to appear on air.

The use of artificial intelligence means messages can be tailored to individuals, making them harder to detect than traditional scam emails.

Shine Radio is advising authors to be cautious of requests for payment, urgent language, unfamiliar links or inconsistencies in email addresses and branding.

The station is also encouraging people who have received similar emails to come forward to help warn others.
