DTT switch-off plans raise concerns for radio

The Department for Culture, Media & Sport has published a Green Paper on the future of UK media, including Digital Terrestrial Television and its effect on radio.
The document, released today on 23rd June, seeks views on two possible timelines for moving to internet-only TV services, either by 2034 or 2044. The consultation will help decide which date is chosen, with a final decision expected later this year.
Many TV transmission sites are shared with radio, so any change to DTT could significantly affect radio broadcasting costs and the range of services available to listeners.
Radiocentre is currently assessing how a DTT switch-off would impact the radio sector and will submit its findings to the government before the consultation closes on 31st August.
The organisation is also working with DCMS and the wider industry on a Digital Radio & Audio Review, due to finish this autumn.
Radiocentre CEO Matt Payton said the government is right to focus on future access to UK media and highlighted that broadcast radio remains important for millions of listeners.
Matt also noted that a 2034 switch-off could create major cost issues for radio broadcasters and stressed the need for government decisions to consider radio’s future.
