NLive Radio secures future without University backing

NLive Radio will continue broadcasting to Northampton after establishing a new community organisation to take over the station following the loss of university funding.

The station has confirmed that its future operation will be managed entirely by volunteers, with a new board of directors overseeing the move away from the University of Northampton.

The change follows an announcement in August that the university would end its core funding, prompting a fundraising appeal to help the station become independent.

Former Station Manager Rebecca Steers, who has led NLive Radio for seven years, will remain involved as a volunteer director, providing strategic advice during the transition.

Joining Rebecca on the board are producer and presenter John Leivers, who currently hosts Afternoon Delight, and long serving presenter Terry Steers, who has a background in local business.

The station has also secured new premises at Spencer Dallington Community Centre, which is operated by The Lewis Foundation, with work now underway to create new broadcast studios ahead of an official launch in the coming months.

A grant from Northampton Town Council has helped fund the move and development of the facilities, alongside contributions from listeners and other supporters.

Rebecca said: “When we launched our appeal in August, we were asking Northampton to help secure the future of truly local radio. The response has been incredible and we’re delighted that the new organisation is now established and leading the station into its next chapter.”

The new organisation also hopes to become a registered charity in the future, while continuing to provide local news, information and opportunities for people to gain broadcasting and journalism experience.

Despite securing its immediate future, NLive Radio says generating sustainable income remains a priority, with regular donations, advertising and sponsorship being encouraged.

Rebecca added: “Every donation, fundraising ticket sold, sponsorship agreement and advertising campaign helps us continue serving Northampton.”
