Matthew Biggs signs off from Radio 4 show

Matthew Biggs’ final appearance on Gardeners’ Question Time will air on BBC Radio 4 during Mental Health Awareness Week.

The programme was recorded at The Serge Hill Project and marks Matthew’s last edition after more than 30 years on the show.

Matthew joined the panel in 1994 and has been living with cancer since 2020. He is now receiving palliative care after his illness entered its end stage.

The special edition features Matthew alongside presenters Peter Gibbs and Kathy Clugston, with panellists Pippa Greenwood, Christine Walkden and Anne Swithinbank.

Tom Stuart-Smith and Sue Stuart-Smith also appear in the programme, which explores gardening, wellbeing and mental health.

Mohit Bakaya, Controller of BBC Radio 4, said: “Everyone at Radio 4 is deeply grateful to Matthew for everything he has given to Gardeners’ Question Time over the years.”

He added: “This programme, recorded at The Serge Hill Project, feels like a fitting and moving way to celebrate his time with the show.”

During the broadcast, Matthew speaks about his diagnosis, treatment and the impact terminal illness has had on his mental and physical wellbeing. The programme was recorded with his wife Gill, daughters Chloe and Jessica, and members of the production team present.

Gardeners’ Question Time airs on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds at 3pm today, Friday 15 May.
