BBC Radio Manchester marks Salford music centenary day

A special schedule of Salford music will take over BBC Radio Manchester to mark the city’s centenary.
Programming on Tuesday 21 April will focus entirely on artists and records connected to Salford, reflecting its long-standing role in shaping British pop, rock and alternative music.
The station will play tracks from acts including Joy Division, New Order, Happy Mondays, Elkie Brooks, 10cc, The Hollies and The Charlatans, all with roots in the city.
Presenter Mike Sweeney, a former member of The Salford Jets, will feature his track Who You Lookin’ At while discussing Salford’s grassroots music scene and the station’s relationship with it.
From 10am, Michelle Dignan will broadcast live from Salford Museum and Art Gallery, sharing stories and memories linked to the city’s past 100 years. Joe McGrath will also contribute live segments from across Salford, including visits to well-known locations.
BBC Radio Manchester, based at MediaCity in Salford Quays, is using the day to highlight both the city’s cultural history and its ongoing connection to local broadcasting.
Andrew Bowman said: “Salford has such a great musical heritage, and we’re proud to be able to mark the city’s 100th birthday with a special playlist.”
Listeners can hear the output on BBC Radio Manchester and BBC Sounds.
